Baby Steps

A quick video I captured after my evening walk - I'm taking my life in a new direction.

Note: This video probably shows the day's least attractive version of myself. Que sera.

Congrats on the walk. And thank you as always for the encouragement.

Great comments on your first walk! I actually started using the eliptical (that's in my apartment - unreal, I know) this week, so I am absolutely with you in spirit and share so much of what you've expressed about wanting to finally take charge of this issue for myself too.

Rooting for you! (and me!)

I think you look beautiful. :)

(I have a whole set of theories on exercise and attractiveness and how it's another way that you're doing something for YOURSELF, not for someone else. I should blog about it sometime.)

You're off to a great start. Here's another tip. Pick a podcast or buy an audiobook you really want to listen to, load it onto an iPod, and listen to it while you're working out. I find it makes me feel more like exercising is an indulgence instead of a chore.

(Hmm. I use This American Life, but I should consider this an excuse to start picking up the Harry Potter audiobooks. I bet I could run forever to Jim Dale.)

Congratulations on your baby steps. Actually, you've taken much bigger steps than you think because you've figured out how to approach this new goal.

You're absolutely right: (1)Getting started is the toughest part. (2)Don't think of it as a commitment...think of it as a priority. Until and unless it's a priority, it's very hard to stick with it.

People have asked me for twenty years how I find time for a particular time-gobbling activity that's a big part of my life. "I'd love to do that," they say, "but I just don't have the time."

I respond by telling them that it's a priority. And if it's a priority, you have the time. If you don't have the time, you find the time. If you can't find the time, you make the time. And if you can't make the time, then you just by-God take the time.

If you ever need a walking buddy, I believe I'm approximately .5 miles away from you. I always love a good walk.
